Capturing the moment with my Iphone

Hi after writing about various Photographers from around the world I have decided that I would post up a selection of my Iphone photographs. After spending quite some time being really opposed to owning Apple products I finally gave in and got myself the Iphone4, my opinion soon change within days of owning the phone. I thought "that's not really a phone, it's just an App holder". Well it's these "Apps" that really helped me to develop the things I can do with what at first would be a snapshot and now can be viewed in a whole new light.
.
Chase Jarvis recently released a book featuring his Iphone photographs. Chase Jarvis is a world renowned photographer firmly believes that "the best camera is the one that's with you". I believe this to be true. It's not about having all the latest functions and the most mega-pixels, it's not about having the most expensive camera or the most expensive lens.

It's about being there. A bad photograph is still a bad photograph if taken with a £2000 camera with a £1000 lens on front, it's just a better quality bad photo. I believe the camera is a tool to help record a moment in time, to tell a story.
Even though i have just said that a bad photograph is sill a bad photograph even if you use the best equipment, the idea of a bad photo only really exists if you look at the photo from a technical point of view and for some this is what really matters. " Your shot is not sharp, you have blown out whites, the composition is wrong", these all just get in the way of what really matters and that's taking the photograph, capturing the moment.
I love nothing more than to set off on my own in a new town or city with my Iphone in my hand looking up and down, left and right ready to capture what I see. People are far more relaxed when you don't have the latest DSLR camera pointing at them, this makes for a far more natural and relaxed image.
I will normally see a person that captures my attention, I will then choose the Camera app that I feel will help me get the best from the situation (some apps enable a faster ISO for low light, but it's not essential), then I will walk up and take the shot. I take only the one shot as it's all about the moment. Once taken i will say thank you if the person notices, as a thank you and a smile (or even just a smile) go a long way. I feel it rude to not acknowledge the person involved.
On my wanders I look out for interesting pools of light, strong light contrasts, textures, oddities, little details that I feel encapsulate the area. It may be an interesting composition of shapes, colour or shadows. I often will have a (actual) camera with me but I always have my phone so I am always taking photos every day.
So below I have chosen a few photographs that are purely taken on my Iphone, I hope you find them as enjoyable to look at as I did in wandering around looking for the shots.

  1. I recently changed my iPhone for an Android phone.....I needed something bigger, the iPhone is too small for me. I do have my trusty iPod touch/iPad as I could not live without Hipstamatic which is just wonderful.
