Big World Reviews #5 Grant Jones

Grant Jones is a Glasgow, Scotland based photographer and his work mainly consists of landscapes and cityscapes all of which are beautifully captured.

The opening page to Grant's website has a clean and simple look to it. I often feel this is one of the best ways to have a photography home page set out as its lets the photography do the talking . The only thing missing from the home page is a link to information about the photographer, although there is a tiny bit in the contact section to the website.

The home page has links to sub-pages Lomond, The West, Upon The Clyde and The east, as well as a contact page link.

Lomond
There are a collection of stunning lake scenes and landscapes.  The photographs really pull you into each scene. I find them truly beautiful.
Some stand-out photographs are;

Slipaway
This is a striking image that plays with geometric shapes found in the scene. The way the Grant has simplified the scene down to its tonal values, make this a fantastic use of tone and composition.

Beauty with a twist
I really like this image as the twisted old tree makes me think of a big creature from out of this world, coming out of the water. The smooth textures really make the tree pop.

The West
The photographs here are a selection of landscapes with a a lot of them featuring water, as do a lot of Grant’s photographs. Some photographs that stand out are;

The Departure
The quay in this photograph set bellow the incredibly straight and crisp water’s edge in the background makes for a very striking image.

Air conditioned, transport provided. Glen Etive

Upon The Clyde
A small, but well captured selection of photographs taken featuring the Clyde. Some of the stand-out images for me are;

The Black and Lighthouse
This is a simple photograph that makes the Lighthouse really pop in the centre of this photograph. With no other details complicating this image, this makes for a striking photograph.

Alone
The title really says it all about this haunting photograph. The dilapidated boat looks like it is being taken away by the milky water. This is a great composition using just the boat alone.

The East
This is a small, but perfectly formed, selection of photographs that continue the water theme that runs through-out this website.

The mystery
I really love the way the water barrier zig-zags its way into the frame. The use of long exposure helps make the water milky and with the ghost-like movement around the structure, this makes for a very ethereal image.

The warning
This is a superbly simple image. The warning post really pops against the soft water and with the hint of detail in the background, I find that this image really works for me and I may go as far to say that it may also be one of my favourite photographs that are featured on grant’s website.

All in all this is a simple website with some fantastic images that I find inspiring and I am sure you to will love them and find them a source of inspiration.
