Hilton Vasey is a mutli media artist from the U.K, using performance,
installation and photography. Hilton gained his BA Fine art at Kingston then
later, his MA Fine Art in Staffordshire. He gets his inspirations form a wide
range of influences including Cindy Sherman, Mary Ried Kelly, Egon Schiele
(especially his photography) and German Expressionism to name few.
Hilton is a very interesting artist his work is very
involved. From the construction of head wear and masks that have a Steampunk
feel about them. In Hilton’s own works he is very much interested in the blurry
line between fiction and reality. When i look at his costumes in is photography
it makes me think of a futuristic world but if the late 1800s, early 1900s had
never really progressed. Looking at Hilton’s work, I can so easily be taken
into my own cinemagraphic world. I find
myself wondering off into a surreal world. The figures in his photographs are
like the doormen to another secret world.
“The work is self-reflective constructed from identities from found
materials and amalgamation of personal nostalgic experiences with popular
culture. To investigate and challenge the way memory and fiction
changes through observation.”Hilton Vasey
Hilton predominately uses Polariod photography with a
Polaroid Image camera, but the beauty of his camera is that it has a fault in
it. This fault is a perfect example of what artist’s term as “happy accidents”.
His Polariod enables him to take these wonderfully dreamy double exposures.
With Hilton now working on a new project looking at identity
by using various 70’s Sci-fi films such as “Man fell to earth” with the project
incorporating 100’s of Polariod’s which Hilton hopes to then publish as a book.
