In these series of posts i thought it would be good to give you an insight into the photographers, and their various styles of photography, that inspire me to go and take more photographs. i hope these photographers help to give you ideas and inspiration.
Gregory Crewdson (b.1962)
Gregory Crewdson is is best known for highly
elaborately staged and lit scenes of American streets and homes. The scenes are
often surreal tableau's of life. His photographic series are often lengthy. Some
of his series are “Natural Wonder”(1988), “Wonder, Hover”(1995) and “Twilight”(2003).
“I have always been fascinated by the poetic
condition twilight. By it’s trans-formative quality. It’s power of turning the
ordinary into something magical and otherworldly. My wish is for the narrative
in the pictures to work within that circumstance. It is that sense of
in-between-ness that interests me.” Gregory Crewdson.
David LaChapelle is known for highly creative portraits and
fashion photography. His work is jam packed with colour and often, tongue in
cheek, humor. His photographs sometimes look at first glance that they are heavily
Photo-shopped but they are not, instead he uses clever lighting and the use of
bright colours and lots of textures. His striking photographs have often been
on the covers and pages of Vogue, Vanity
fair, GQ, and Rolling Stone. He
has photographed all manner of personalities such as Madonna, Uma Thurman, Elizabeth Taylor, Jeff Koons and Hillary Clinton.
“My work is about
making candy for the eyes. It’s about grabbing your attention. Even though my
work is appearing in magazines I am trying to make a large picture. I want my
photographs to read like a poster” David LaChapelle
Helmut Newton was a fashion photographer whose style was,
and still is, imitated by many photographers. He is best known for his
erotically charged black & white photographs. His photographs were heavily used by
Vogue and many other publications. Some of his portraits featured that of
Nastassja Kinski and Kristine DeBell.
“Any photographer who
says he’s not a voyeur is either stupid or a liar” “My job as a photographer is
to seduce, amuse and entertain”. Helmut Newton
