World photography highlights #1 Croatia

In these posts I thought it would be a good idea to focus on photographers from an individual country, after all this is the Big World Picture.
In this post I thought I would start with Croatia.

In Croatia events are semioccasional with most of the significant photography collections stored in the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Zagreb Photo Club. Contemporary Croatian photography exists through small, individual events. Most of these events are short term projects funded or sponsored by galleries such as CEFFT (Centre for Photography and Film at the MSU – Museum of Contemporary Art, Zegred).

So that was a short introduction to the Contemporary Photographic scene, below is a small selection of the wide and varied Photographers from Croatia.

Darije Petkovic (b.1974)

Petkovic worked for fifteen years as a photographer and photo editor in political weeklies. He now works as an assistant professor in the Cinematography Department at the Academy of Dramatic Arts.

“How do you assess the current state of Croatian photography?
I think our image is generally for many years in some sort of appendix Europe. I think Croatian photographers not break the Croatian border in the gallery sense. Here and there, maybe someone do something, which is great, but I do not know that they are our photographers who are world famous. Looking at our environment, throughout history we have the world famous Italian photographers, Austrians, Hungarians, Italians, not to talk about the Germans and the French, but these areas are not world famous photographer.”

Josip Klarica(b.1946)

Klarica studied photography at the School for Applied Arts in Zagreb and then later studied at Carl’s University in Prague. After graduating Klarica returned to live and work in Zagreb since 1977. Klarica studied the history of photography techniques and photochemical processes. He had shows where he exhibited works created by successfully reconstructing old photography processes. He used camera obscurers and a replica, that he reconstructed himself, of the panorama chamber from 1845.
This mixing of the old photographic techniques with modern artistic ideas resulted in the absorbing and gripping works that are full of symbolic meaning and poetic visions.
